'بِسْمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيْمِ

Who Are the Prophets in Islam?

The Prophets in Islam were exceptional individuals chosen by Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) and sent to different nations as guides, reformers, and living examples of righteousness. Their mission was to call humanity to the worship of Allah alone and to uphold truth, justice, and moral excellence.

While the Qur’an mentions 25 Prophets by name, it affirms that many more were sent throughout history, as Allah says: “And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger” (Surah An-Nahl, 16:36).

Prophet Idris

Prophet Idris (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was among the early Prophets sent after Adam. He is known for his righteousness, wisdom, and dedication to guiding people toward worshipping Allah and living a life of truth and patience.

Prophet Nuh

Prophet Nuh (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to a people who had fallen into disbelief and idol worship. He called them to worship Allah alone with great patience and perseverance, and his story teaches steadfast faith and trust in Allah’s command.

Allah the Most Exalted Says in the Qur'an:

نَحۡنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيۡكَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡقَصَصِ بِمَآ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ هَٰذَا
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ وَإِن كُنتَ مِن قَبۡلِهِۦ لَمِنَ ٱلۡغَٰفِلِينَ

Nahnu naqussu alaika ahsanal qasasi bimaaa awhainaaa ilaika haazal quraana Wa-in kunta min qablihee laminal ghaafileen

English Translation:
“We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.” (Qur’an 12:3)

Prophet Saleh

Prophet Saleh (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to the people of Thamud. He called them to worship Allah alone and warned them against corruption, and his story teaches obedience, patience, and respect for Allah’s signs.

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلٗا مِّن قَبۡلِكَ مِنۡهُم مَّن قَصَصۡنَا عَلَيۡكَ

Wa-laqad arsalnaa Rusulam min qablika minhum man qasasnaa alaika

English Translation:
“And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you,” (Qur’an 40:78)

نَّحۡنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيۡكَ نَبَأَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ

Nahnu naqussu alaika naba-ahum bilhaqq

English Translation:
“It is We who relate to you, [O Muḥammad], their story in truth” (Qur’an 18:13)

Prophet Ya‘qub

Prophet Ya‘qub (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was the son of Ishaq and a Prophet of Allah. He is known for his patience, deep trust in Allah, and for guiding his family upon faith and righteousness.

Prophet Yusuf

Prophet Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was the son of Ya‘qub and a Prophet of Allah. His life teaches patience, chastity, forgiveness, and complete trust in Allah through hardship and ease.

Prophet Ayyub

Prophet Ayyub (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a Prophet of Allah known for his unmatched patience and steadfast faith. His life teaches endurance through hardship and unwavering trust in Allah’s mercy and wisdom.

وَكُلّٗا نَّقُصُّ عَلَيۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَۚ
وَجَآءَكَ فِي هَٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَمَوۡعِظَة وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Wa-kullan naqussu alaika min ambaaa’ir Rusuli maa nusabbitu bihee fu’aadak; Wa-jaaa’aka fee haazihil haqqu Wa-maw’izatunw Wa-zikraa lilmu’-mineen

English Translation:
“And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.” (Qur’an 11:120)

Prophet Shu‘aib

Prophet Shu‘aib (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to the people of Madyan. He called them to worship Allah alone and to be honest in trade and dealings, teaching justice, integrity, and righteousness.

Prophet Musa

Prophet Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to free the Children of Israel and confront Pharaoh. His story teaches courage, reliance on Allah, and steadfastness in standing for truth against oppression.

Prophet Harun

Prophet Harun (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was the brother of Musa and a Prophet of Allah. He supported Musa in conveying Allah’s message and is known for his wisdom, patience, and gentle leadership.

لَقَدۡ كَانَ فِي قَصَصِهِمۡ عِبۡرَة لِّأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِۗ مَا كَانَ حَدِيثٗا
يُفۡتَرَىٰ تَصۡدِيقَ بَيۡنَ وَتَفۡصِيلَ شَيۡءٖ وَرَحۡمَةٗ

يُؤۡمِنُونَ

Laqad kaana fee qasasihim ibratul li-ulil albaab; maa kaana hadeethany yuftaraa Wa-laakin tasdeeqal lazee baina yadaihi Wa-tafseela kulli shai’inw Wa-hudanw Wa-rahmatal liqawmien yu’minoon

English Translation:
“There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.” (Qur’an 12:111)

Prophet Dhul-Kifl

Prophet Dhul-Kifl (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a Prophet of Allah known for his righteousness, patience, and commitment to justice. His life teaches responsibility, self-discipline, and steadfast obedience to Allah.

Prophet Dawud

Story Of Prophet Dawud

Prophet Dawud (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a Prophet and a king blessed with wisdom and strength. He ruled with justice, worshipped Allah devotedly, and was given the Zabur as guidance for his people.

Prophet Sulaiman

Story Of Prophet Sulaiman

Prophet Sulaiman (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was the son of Dawud and a Prophet-king blessed with great wisdom. He ruled with justice and gratitude, using Allah’s gifts in obedience and humility.

فَٱقۡصُصِ ٱلۡقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

faqsusil qasasa la’allahum yatafakkaroon

English Translation:
“So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.” (Qur’an 7:176)

Prophet Ilyas

Story Of Prophet Ilyas

Prophet Ilyas (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to a people who had turned to idol worship. He called them back to worship Allah alone, teaching sincerity, steadfast faith, and devotion to the truth.

Prophet Al-Yasa‘

Prophet Al-Yasa‘ (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a Prophet of Allah who continued the mission of calling people to worship Allah alone. He is known for righteousness, patience, and upholding divine guidance among his people.

Prophet Yunus

Prophet Yunus (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was sent to the people of Nineveh. His story teaches repentance, humility, and Allah’s mercy upon those who sincerely turn back to Him.

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلٗا مِّن قَبۡلِكَ مِنۡهُم مَّن قَصَصۡنَا عَلَيۡكَ

Wa-laqad arsalnaa Rusulam min qablika minhum man qasasnaa alaika

English Translation:
“And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you,” (Qur’an 40:78)

Prophet Yahya (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was the son of Zakariya and a Prophet of Allah. He is known for his purity, wisdom from a young age, and steadfast commitment to righteousness.

Prophet Isa
